Fruit trees are rewarding trees, showing a stunning floral display in the spring and plenty of fruit in summer. However, this takes a lot of resources and for that reason; these trees are fragile and susceptible to disease and decay if not maintained properly.
Fruit trees need maintenance on a yearly basis, this means less needs to be taken off in one sitting, allowing for easier and quicker healing. This is important so that the tree can carry on with little side effect.
Pruning techniques need to alternate from year to year, the first concentrating on;
The second year should be concentrated on reducing and removing water growth.
Pruning should take place when the tree is dormant in mid-winter.
On-going maintenance is carried out with secateurs with every branch being assessed for health and strength, pruning out canker.
